My child is transitioning from a Handycard to a new Westpac Debit Mastercard® on a Youth account what do I need to know to support them?

As the parent or guardian of a Westpac Choice Youth Account holder under the age of 14, you’ll receive important updates and instructions regarding any changes or actions needed for your child’s account, including this transition to a new Westpac Debit Mastercard®.

To help your child transition to their new Westpac Debit Mastercard®, you may need to assist with setting up or updating their Westpac Online Banking access and guiding them through card activation and PIN setup. We also encourage you to check your parental controls to monitor and manage account features in Online Banking.

In the Westpac App or Online Banking:

  1. Find your child’s Choice Youth account
  2. Select Family Hub

If you can’t see the controls in your Online Banking, you can visit us in branch with your child and your ID documents and we’ll set you up with access.

Our Westpac Choice Youth customers under the age of 14 require you as the parent or guardian to be set up with Parental Control on the account.

Parental Control is available through your Westpac Online Banking. Select your child's Choice Youth account and then select Westpac Family Hub.

Parental controls are available through the Family Hub in Westpac Online Banking.

To access the Family Hub, log into your Westpac Online Banking, go to your child’s Westpac Choice Youth account and select Westpac Family Hub. From there, you can set spending limits and monitor activity to help manage your child’s account safely.

You’ll receive your new Westpac Debit Mastercard® by mail within 30-45 days of receiving the initial notification of the upcoming change. Keep an eye on your email and mail for updates.

If your new card hasn’t arrived within this timeframe, you can call us on 1300 131 331 for an update.

Please ensure that your contact details including your address, phone number, and email are up to date, so you don’t miss any important notifications.

You’ll receive a series of communication alerts via email to let you know that the new card is on the way.

Once your child’s Debit Mastercard® arrives, they can activate it and set up their PIN by signing in to their Westpac Online Banking using their customer ID and password. As the parent or guardian, you can help guide them through the steps outlined in their activation instructions.

If your child doesn’t have Westpac Online Banking, you can help them register. Once they’re signed in, you can help your child set up their new Westpac Debit Mastercard® in Westpac Online Banking, where they can activate their card and set up their PIN.

If you choose not to register your child for Westpac Online Banking, you and your child will need to visit your nearest branch for assistance with card setup.

For Westpac Choice Youth Accounts, a Weekly Spend Limit of $50 on their Westpac Debit Mastercard® is automatically set for children under 14. As the parent or guardian, you can adjust this limit to suit your child’s needs by accessing the Family Hub in Westpac Online Banking. Here, you can set a limit that aligns with your preferences.

Signatory Access is mandatory for customers 13 and under. This means that a parent or guardian must be a signatory on the account to help manage it. Third Party Access allows a parent or guardian to manage Parental Controls and is provided to signatories but is not mandatory. Third Party Access can be removed in the Westpac App for customers aged 14 and above or in a branch for those under 14. As a signatory, you cannot set parental controls because this function requires Third Party Access, which provides additional management capabilities. If you need to manage parental controls, ensure you have Third Party Access set up through the Family Hub in Westpac Online Banking.
