Why am I asked to complete verification when I add my card to Apple Pay?

When you add a card to Apple Pay, you may be required to verify it to help protect your account.  Verification is a two-step process. In the first step, you will be asked to verify the last four digits of your mobile phone number. You will then be sent a SMS Protect Code to your registered mobile number or you may be requested to contact us. This completes the verification process for Apple Pay.
