Why is Westpac replacing my Handycard with a Westpac Debit Mastercard®?
We’re replacing the Westpac Handycard with the Westpac Debit Mastercard® in line with current regulatory expectations to transition from single-network to dual-network debit cards, which offer broader acceptance and greater flexibility.
Single-network cards operate on just one payment network, such as EFTPOS, limiting where and how they can be used. In contrast, dual-network cards like the Westpac Debit Mastercard® operate on both Mastercard and EFTPOS networks. This dual functionality supports a wider range of transactions and merchant acceptance, both domestically and internationally.
This change ensures continued access to essential banking services while aligning with evolving card features. The Westpac Debit Mastercard® supports tap-to-pay, online and digital wallet purchasing, and contactless payments. It also includes enhanced security features such as:
- Dynamic CVC: A security code that changes periodically for online transactions, reducing the risk of fraud compared to static CVCs printed on the card.
- The ability to temporarily lock the card via the app or online banking.
- 24/7 fraud monitoring for added protection.
These updates reflect our commitment to providing secure, flexible, and widely accepted payment solutions.
Westpac is here to support you through this transition. If you need help setting up your new card or understanding its features, please contact us on 1300 131 331, or via the Westpac App, Westpac Online Banking or visit us in branch.
