What do I need to know about the Handycard to Westpac Debit Mastercard® transition?
The transition from Handycard to Westpac Debit Mastercard will begin in August 2025 and continue through to mid-2026. It will occur in stages, and customers will be contacted prior to their transition.
You’ll receive your new Westpac Debit Mastercard® by mail within 30-45 days of receiving the initial notification of the upcoming change. Keep an eye on your mail and email alerts for updates.

If your new card hasn’t arrived within this timeframe, you can call us on 1300 131 331 for an update.
Please ensure that your contact details including your address, phone number, and email are up to date, so you don’t miss any important notifications.
Register for Westpac Online Banking
If you don’t have Westpac Online Banking, you can register. This will allow you to activate and set a new PIN anytime.
Alternative assistance: You can call us on 132 142 (8am – 8pm AEST/AEDT, Monday - Friday) or visit your nearest branch for help. You can find your nearest branch on our locate us page.
Follow activation instructions: Once your new card arrives, follow the activation instructions mentioned on the letter.
Activate your card and set your PIN: Activate your card and set up a new PIN on your new Westpac Debit Mastercard® card before your Handcards’ closure date.
You’ll receive a series of communication alerts via email to let you know that the new card is on the way.
Your new Westpac Debit Mastercard® will be mailed to your nominated postal address - the one registered in our system or where you currently receive replacement cards. If you have additional cardholders, their cards will be sent to the address listed under their cardholder profile.
You can check or update these details via Westpac Online Banking, the Westpac App, or by calling us.
To ensure your card and notifications reach you, update your address, phone number, and email by the date specified in our initial communication.
Steps in Westpac Online Banking:
- Go to Services > Preferences > Personal details.
- Select Personal and Contact Details.
- Enter the SMS code sent to your registered mobile and select Authorise.
- Edit, Add or Delete the address, phone number or email.
Make sure details for any additional cardholders are also up to date.
Yes, you can continue using your Handycard until:
- You activate your new Westpac Debit Mastercard®, or
- The closure date mentioned in your notification - whichever comes first.
If you don’t activate your new card before the closure date, your Handycard will stop working. Your account will remain open, and you can still make transactions like electronic funds transfers. Activating your new card restores full access.
You’ll receive one Westpac Debit Mastercard® to access your account. All existing Handycards will be automatically closed. If you need an additional card, you can order one via Online Banking or the Westpac App—at no extra cost.
No action is required. Westpac will automatically cancel your Handycard when:
- You activate your new card, or
- The closure date arrives—whichever is earlier.
Your account details remain unchanged, so payments using your account number will remain the same and will continue as usual once your new card is activated. Payments using your Handycard number will need to be updated to the new Westpac Debit Mastercard® number.
Yes, you’ll receive a new card with a new card number. But your account number and account type will remain the same.
