WHAT ARE DIGITAL WALLETS AND HOW DO THEY WORK?
What are Digital Wallets and what do they allow me to do?
Digital Wallets, also known as electronic wallets, or mobile wallets are apps that enable you to add a digital version of your eligible credit or debit card to your eligible device (such as a mobile phone or smart watch). Once your card has been added, you can use your Digital Wallet to make credit or debit card transactions without your physical credit or debit card.
Types of Digital Wallets
Westpac customers can use a variety of Digital Wallets on eligible devices.
- Apple Pay is available on eligible iPhones, Apple Watches, iPads and Macs.
- Google Pay, Samsung Pay and Garmin Pay are available on eligible phones or smartwatches.
Are Digital Wallets secure?
The fraud protections under your credit or debit card terms and conditions apply regardless of whether you use your physical card or a Digital Wallet.
What else should I know about using Digital Wallets with a Westpac credit or debit card?
Westpac customers benefit in several ways from using their Westpac credit or debit card within a Digital Wallet. Here are some things you should know:
- New consumer credit or debit cards: While you are waiting for your new card to arrive by post, you can use the Westpac App to access your new card details and add them to your Digital Wallet. This means you can start using it immediately, even before your physical card arrives.
- Lock credit or debit card temporarily: You can use the Westpac App to temporarily lock your credit or debit card. This function will block both your plastic card and the card in your Digital Wallet. You will no longer be able to use this card until you unlock it.
- Report credit or debit card lost or stolen: When you report your credit or debit card as lost or stolen, we will block and cancel that card and issue you with a new card. The replacement card details are automatically updated in your Digital Wallet in real time and you can continue to make transactions without waiting for, or activating, the physical replacement card.
Do I need a Digital Wallet?
Digital Wallets are not necessary for you to use your Westpac credit or debit card but can be a convenient way to pay.
What is the difference between a Digital Wallet and a digital credit or debit card?
A Digital Wallet is an App that allows you to make credit or debit card transactions in store or online, using an eligible device (such as a mobile phone or smartwatch). You must first add your card to your Digital Wallet before you can use your device to make a transaction.
Your Westpac Digital credit or debit card is a complete digital version of your physical card. You can securely view your full card details (card number, expiry date and dynamic CVC*) within the Westpac App without needing to add your digital card to your Digital Wallet. We call this digital view of your card details your “digital card”.
You can use your digital credit or debit card just like your physical card to shop online, pay bills, make in-app purchases or set up your recurring card payments. However, if you wish to use your digital card to shop in-store using your phone or smartwatch, you will need to add it to your Digital Wallet first. You can use your digital card details (viewable in the Westpac App) to add your digital card to your Digital Wallet.
*Dynamic CVC reduces the risk of fraudulent credit or debit card activity as it refreshes your Westpac Digital Card’s 3-digit security number every 24 hours – making your card details even more secure.
