Who we are

This privacy notice explains how Westpac collects, uses, and protects your personal information when you create a customer profile before arriving in Australia.

What we collect

To create your customer profile, we collect:

  • Your name and date of birth;
  • Arrival to Australia date and country where you usually reside;
  • Your contact details including email address, mobile number, and your Australian address; and
  • Your employment type and occupation.

Providing this information is necessary to create your customer profile and prepare for account opening. If you do not provide it, we may be unable to create your profile.

Identity documents are only collected and verified in person after you arrive in Australia, ensuring compliance with local regulations.

How we use your information

We use your information to:

  • Create a customer profile before you arrive in Australia;
  • Contact you about completing your account setup;
  • Provide information about the next steps in opening your account;
  • Assess your eligibility to open an account and manage pre-arrival onboarding;
  • Ensure that we do not offer services to individuals in sanctioned countries or to restricted parties; and
  • Comply with our anti-money laundering and counter-terrorism financing (AML/CTF) obligations and other regulatory requirements.

Why we are allowed to use your information

We handle your information because it is necessary to take steps you have requested before entering into an agreement with us, to meet our legal and regulatory obligations, and for our legitimate business interests in managing onboarding activities securely and responsibly, provided these interests do not override your rights and freedoms.

In some countries, including where required by local law, we may also rely on your consent to collect, use, or share your personal information. Where we rely on consent, you may withdraw it at any time by contacting us.

Sharing and international transfers

We may share your information with:

  • Service providers supporting onboarding, technology, and compliance;
  • Other members of the Westpac Group;
  • Regulatory authorities, as required by law.

Your information is transferred to Australia (which does not have the same level of data protection as the EU/UK) and may be transferred to other countries where our group operates, or where our service providers are located. We use appropriate safeguards—such as contractual protections or equivalent measures—to ensure your information remains protected. You can contact us to obtain more information about these safeguards.

We do not sell your personal information.

Retention

We keep your information only as long as necessary to complete your onboarding process or as required by law.

Your privacy rights

Depending on where you live, you may have rights to:

  • Access, correct, or delete your personal information;
  • Object to or restrict how we use your personal information;
  • Withdraw any consent you have given. You can withdraw consent at any time without affecting the lawfulness of any processing carried out before withdrawal; or
  • Complain to your local privacy or data protection authority.

You can exercise these rights or ask questions about your privacy by contacting us using the details below.
