Mobile travel apps
Smartphones and the wide range of apps can certainly make overseas travel that little bit easier. But having all that information - or access to it - in the palm of your hand, does contain a risk: global roaming on overseas networks and its associated charges.
These can be quite large, and have been responsible for many instances of 'bill shock' when people arrive home from even short-term trips overseas. The tip is to switch this off before departing or monitor closely while away.
Additionally, a new International Mobile Roaming standard - introduced by the Australian Communications and Media Authority - means Australians will be provided with opt-out information via SMS when switching on their mobiles overseas.
