Meet Merryn

As the wife of a full-time member of the Australian military, Merryn and her family have had to move around Australia quite a bit. Having an employer like Westpac, has helped Merryn balance her family commitments and career.

How are you connected to the Defence Force?

My husband Peter has been a full-time member of the Australian military for 20 years.

Describe your current role at Westpac and previous roles

I started my Westpac journey in 1999 in the Merchant Services Contact Centre. I am currently a Digital Product Owner for our regional brands, St George, Bank of Melbourne and Bank SA. I have been in my current role since 2016 but have been in the Digital team since 2006 and have been able to remain within the Digital team even while moving around Australia. In 2008 my husband and I moved to Queensland. In the two years we were there I worked remotely from my Sydney team out of one of our Business Banking offices.

How has working at Westpac helped you balance your commitments to supporting your husband’s career as a serving military member and your career?

The respect and support that my family and I have received from my Digital management team over the years has been incredible. They have helped me retain and develop my career path all while dealing with the challenges of military life. Westpac provides me with the flexibility I need day to day to support not only my husband, but also my two sons. I have always worked full time and it is very important to me to be able to retain my career.

Why should spouses consider Westpac as a future employer?

Spouses should absolutely choose Westpac as an employer. Working in an organisation that supports and acknowledges the challenges of military life makes me incredibly proud to be an employee.  As a spouse, it is empowering to know we can maintain and develop our skills in an environment that supports us during posting cycles and provides us with such a large choice of available roles nationally or other flexible working arrangements.
