Sending and receiving money overseas

When you need to send money overseas from Australia, you can do so:

  • Online
  • With an Overseas telegraphic transfer
  • At your local Westpac branch

You may want to check the currency exchange rates before you send money overseas.



You can transfer money overseas, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, from your own home or office using Westpac Online Banking.

You will need to be:

  • A  Westpac customer
  • Registered for internet banking and Westpac Protect SMS Code

Fees and charges

When transferring money overseas by internet, the fee is $20.

How to organise

  • Sign in to internet banking
  • Hover over the Payments tab at the top of your screen and select Make a payment.
  • Follow the steps to send a payment.


Overseas Telegraphic Transfer

You can send money overseas quickly and safely to most countries in the world and in most foreign currencies, using an overseas telegraphic transfer.  This can be done at a Westpac branch or over the internet. 

What you will need

To send an overseas telegraphic transfer, you will need:

  • Identification
  • Details of the person receiving the money, such as their name, address, the name of their bank, branch address and their account number
  • The amount you wish to send
  • The currency you wish to send.

Fees and charges

When sending by an overseas telegraphic transfer, the fees and charges are as follows:

  • When sending over the internet: $20
  • When requesting at a branch: $32
  • When requesting at a branch to Pacific Westpac accounts only: $101


Sending money back to Australia

When you are travelling, or living overseas, and need to send money back to Australia safely and quickly, you can send an overseas telegraphic transfer from most banks. 

What you will need:

The bank account details of the person you are sending the money to, including their:

  • Bank name
  • Branch name
  • Account name
  • Account number.

Fees and charges

The overseas bank you use to send funds to Australia will charge you a fee, which varies depending on the bank and country. In addition to this fee, we charge $12.00 if your payment is to a Westpac account.


Receiving money from overseas

When you receive money from overseas, you will receive it faster when it is deposited electronically into your Westpac account.

What you will need:

Any Westpac transaction or savings account.

Fees and charges:

The following fees and charges apply to receiving overseas telegraphic transfers when deposited:

  • Into your account: $12
  • Into an account at another local bank in Australian dollars: $24
  • Into an account at another local bank in foreign currency: $50
  • By bank cheque or cash: $22.

How to organise

If you are expecting money from overseas, give your Westpac bank account details to the sender so your money arrives safely.
