From 19th August 2021, we will no longer be offering our Low Fee Platinum credit card. If you’d like this card, you need to start (and save) your online application before 19th August 2021. You can retrieve a part-completed application up to 14 days from when you started your application. You’ll also need to activate your new card by the 4th October 2021. Frequently asked questions
A credit card works by allowing you to make cashless payments. Unlike a debit card, a credit card uses the bank’s (or other issuing institution’s) money and not yours, so you need to pay it back. They also charge interest on the money borrowed (though many credit cards offer interest-free days on new purchases when repayment conditions are met). Paying your credit card off sooner can help reduce those interest charges. On a similar note, if you don’t repay at least the minimum amount due each month, your credit score could be affected.
To get a credit card you usually apply with a bank, although other institutions offer them too. As you’ll be in-effect borrowing someone else’s money, applications might ask you to demonstrate that you live here, have a regular income (minimum required depends on card type), and are able to make the repayments. You can apply for a Westpac credit card online, via our call centre or in-branch. Our applications include a credit check and we’ll ask for certain documentation – though this might vary if you already have an account with us. Note the act of applying affects your credit rating.
The most common way of using a credit card is to make a cashless payment in person (e.g. by swiping or tapping at a shop), online or by phone. Each month, you’ll be sent a statement listing all your transactions, total amount owing and minimum repayment required. The slower you repay a credit card the more interest you'll pay, so always aim to pay off as much as possible. Westpac credit cards can help keep you on top of your repayments with options like Card Autopay, SmartPlan1 and SMS payment reminders.
Cards with a balance transfer offer
Save on credit card interest and fees by transferring the balance of up to 3 other credit cards – interest-free for an introductory period. After the introductory period, any unpaid transferred balance will revert to the ongoing cash advance rate.

**Low Rate Balance transfer promotion: This offer is available when you apply for a new Low Rate credit card between 24th June 2021 and 30th November 2021, and request at card application to transfer balance(s) from up to 3 non-Westpac Australian issued credit, charge or store cards. A balance transfer fee of 1% will apply to balance(s) transferred to a new Low Rate credit card. The balance transfer fee will be charged to the card account on the same day the balance(s) are debited to the account. The promotional rate will apply to balance(s) transferred (min $200 up to 80% of your approved available credit limit) for the promotional period. Activating your card triggers the processing of the balance transfer. The applicable variable cash advance rate will apply to any unpaid balance transfer amount remaining at the end of the promotional period unless the amount is paid off earlier. Westpac will not be responsible for any delays that may occur in processing payment to your other card account(s) and will not close the account(s). If your account has an interest free period for purchases, to be entitled to that interest free period, you need to pay off the 'Monthly Payment Balance' listed on your statement of account (not the full closing balance) by the relevant payment due date. These promotional offers are not available if you apply under the Westpac Premier Advantage Package.
^^ Low Rate First-Year Annual Card Fee Waiver: is available when you apply and are approved for a new Low Rate credit card between 24th June 2021 and 30th November 2021. After the first year, the $59 annual card fee will be debited to your account annually on the 12-month anniversary of the first transaction on your card account.
#Purchase Rate Promotion: The special promotional rate of 0% p.a. on purchases for 15 months applies from card approval when you apply and are approved for a new Low Fee credit card between 24th June 2021 and 30th November 2021. After 15 months the rate will switch to the variable purchase rate then applicable to your card account.
*Low Fee annual card fee waiver: $0 annual card fee is available for the first year and every year afterwards when you apply and are approved for a new ‘Low Fee’ or ‘Low Fee Platinum’ credit card. To qualify, you must meet the spend criteria on eligible purchases ($5,000 or more for a Low Fee card / $10,000 or more for a Low Fee Platinum card) in each 12-month period, starting from the date you made your first transaction.
2. Interest free period is available on purchases when you pay the Closing Balance (or the Monthly Payment Balance with a balance transfer) in full by the payment due date.
1 SmartPlan: SmartPlan is currently available for all Westpac consumer credit cards. Fees may apply. You need to register for Online Banking before you can set up a SmartPlan. Read the available at westpac.com.au. The establishment fee is charged upfront but is payable in monthly instalments over the term of your Large Purchase SmartPlan. This means that if you cancel your SmartPlan (or don’t make the required SmartPlan repayments) you must still pay the whole establishment fee, including any interest on the establishment fee. SmartPlan requires cardholders to make regular monthly payments for the full term and at the interest rate that applies when the SmartPlan is created. All payments made to your credit card account will be applied first to any SmartPlan instalments. Therefore, debts accruing a higher interest rate may be left unpaid during the SmartPlan term. Any balance transfer amounts on a SmartPlan must have a remaining term of between 3 and 36 months to be eligible for a SmartPlan. See for more details. SmartPlan cancellation takes up to 2 business days. When a SmartPlan ends, any remaining balance will revert to the variable annual interest rate for your balance type or special offer rate as applicable. Cardholders keep interest-free days (if applicable) after a balance transfer when you pay your monthly payment (being your SmartPlan repayments plus the minimum monthly repayment on your credit card account) SmartPlan repayment.

Altitude Rewards: You must be a member of the relevant frequent flyer program to redeem Altitude Points for frequent flyer points. The Altitude Terms and Conditions and the terms and conditions of the relevant frequent flyer program apply. A joining fee may apply. Availability of Reward flights may be limited.
Altitude Velocity or Qantas: In order to earn and redeem points, you must be a member of the relevant Frequent Flyer program. An annual $50 Rewards fee applies for customers who choose this option.

6. Rewards Points: The earning and redemption of Altitude Points, Velocity Points and Qantas Points are subject to the Altitude Terms and Conditions. Purchases that are not eligible to earn Rewards Points are set out in the Altitude Terms and Conditions. You do not receive points if you have not paid the Minimum Payment Due in full and on time and in other circumstances. Qantas and Velocity Points earned during a statement cycle are added to your respective Points balance on a monthly basis.
