What do you need to open a bank account?

Knowing the essential documents and details required to set up a bank account before you apply should simplify and speed up the process. If you already have an active bank account with Westpac, there’s no need to worry about this. If you’re opening your first Westpac account, welcome! You’re only a few steps away from activating your account.

What documentation do you need to open a bank account? 

As well as your personal details including your full name, date of birth and residential address, to open a bank account in Australia here’s a list of documents you’ll need:

 

One primary photographic identification document, such as:
 

  • Passport (Australian or foreign)

  • Australian driver’s licence or foreign driver’s licence with full name and photo

  • National identity card

  • Australian proof of age card 


OR, one primary non-photographic identification document AND one secondary identification document. 

 

Primary non-photographic identification documents include: 
 

  • Australian or foreign birth certificate

  • Australian citizenship certificate

  • Centrelink pension card 

Secondary identification documents and include:
 

  • A notice issued by the Australian Taxation Office including your name and residential address (e.g. a taxation notice)

  • Medicare card

  • Utilities notice including your name and residential address

  • Australian marriage certificate

  • Current tenancy or lease agreement

  • Student identification card including a photo and signature 
     

All documentation must be either an original or a certified copy certified by an authorised certifier.

 

Complete your ID verification online

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders who are unable to present required forms of ID can contact Westpac’s Indigenous Call Centre.

 

What if ID verification didn’t work? 

Unfortunately, sometimes we’re unable to match your information with our ID verification systems. Don’t worry though, visit your local Westpac branch to complete your application in person.

 

If you’re new to Australia, you’ll also need to hold a valid visa, and may need to visit a branch for an ID check.
