Westpac Institutional Bank appoints John Chauvel Head of Debt Capital Markets

Westpac Institutional Bank (Westpac) today announced the appointment of John Chauvel as Managing Director and Head of Debt Capital Markets.

With a career in Australia and the US spanning 27 years, John was most recently the Head of the Financial Institutions Group, Australia, at ANZ for six years.

Reporting to Managing Director and Head of Debt Markets Tony Masciantonio, John will manage the businesses that arrange debt for Westpac’s corporate and institutional customers.  This encompasses a large range of services including loan syndication, project financing, acquisition finance, asset finance, structured finance, securitisation and domestic and offshore bonds. 

Westpac’s Head of Debt Markets Tony Masciantonio said; “Westpac has been a long term leader in these markets in Australia, and is looking to further build on this strength to give customers access to a wider variety of competitive borrowing options both domestically and offshore.”
“With extensive banking and international experience, John will assist in driving this strategy. His appointment is another strong addition to Westpac’s growing Debt Markets franchise,” Mr Masciantonio said.

“John brings a breadth of experience across his career in wholesale banking which will help maintain Westpac’s position as the number one choice for clients seeking to raise funds in this competitive environment ,” he said.

Prior to ANZ, John spent nine years at Société Générale where he was the New York-based Head of Asset Backed Securities Group and Head of Securitisation at SG Australia based in Sydney.

Starting his banking career with Westpac in 1987, John held senior roles over 11 years with the Institutional Bank including in corporate banking, project finance, corporate advisory, project advisory and securitisation.

John returns to Westpac, replacing Karen Silk who was appointed General Manager Institutional Banking at Westpac New Zealand in November 2012.
