Where together we can create bright ideas

Meet Matt. Matt Brotherton is the Director of Payments & Cards Technology and a passionate advocate for greater gender balance in technology.

As the leader of a large team and the father of an 11 year old son and 13 year old daughter, Matt understands the importance of having strong role models and mentors.

“We need to break down gender stereotypes and demonstrate how technology can be a hugely rewarding career for both men and women,” says Matt.

Matt is a male champion of change in the Westpac Women in Technology & Leadership action group and plays a leading role in helping to build an inclusive and diverse workforce.

“I’ve had various mentors over the years that have really helped me to broaden my perspective, challenge me and offer a helping hand when needed. Mentors and role models can shine the light and help you imagine what’s possible.

I’ve worked in finance and technology for most of my career and have worked with an incredible array of people. Westpac is Australia’s first bank and we take very seriously our responsibility to lead the way in building and cultivating a workplace culture that values difference and equality.

My own experience is that diversity of thought, capability and experience brings about the best ideas, and teams that work together rather than in competition create the best results.

Flexible ways of working

With technology it is easier to be more flexible about where I work and when. With two teenage children, in my role I value having the flexibility to shift things around so I can be there for the things that matter in their lives. My son recently competed in a national diving competition and I wouldn’t have missed that for the world.

The digital future

Technology touches virtually everything and there’re so many new developments and opportunities to explore. I think encouraging future generations to consider a career in technology is smart and I know technology can offer a hugely rewarding career – whoever you are.”
