Miller named Westpac institutional chief

Westpac has named Deutsche Bank Australia and New Zealand CEO Anthony Miller as chief of its Institutional Bank.

Westpac’s chief executive Peter King has moved another step closer to finalising his executive team, naming one of the nation’s most senior investment bankers as chief of the group’s institutional banking division.

A week after locking in a new chief financial officer, Mr King today revealed the appointment of Deutsche Bank Australia and New Zealand CEO Anthony Miller as chief of Westpac Institutional Bank. He will take the reins later in the year from treasurer Curt Zuber, who recently stepped into the WIB role on an acting basis following the retirement of former chief Lyn Cobley in late May.

Mr King said Mr Miller would bring extensive global institutional banking and risk management experience, most recently from global major Deutsche – where he was co-head of its Asia Pacific Investment Bank – and after an extensive career at Goldman Sachs.

“He has been in client facing roles for the past 20 years and has deep banking and financial markets experience, which will be invaluable as we work to further strengthen our relationships with our corporate and institutional clients,” Mr King said.

Prior to joining Deutsche in 2017, Mr Miller spent 16 years with Goldman Sachs, most recently in Hong Kong and as a partner in the Financing Group for Asia Pacific within the investment banking division.

The appointment continues a busy period for Mr King since recently being confirmed as CEO, last week releasing the bank’s culture, governance and accountability reassessment and naming KPMG partner Michael Rowland as CFO.

In May he also brought in Jason Yetton as chief of a new Specialist Businesses Division and last month named Les Vance as Group Executive, Financial Crime, Compliance and Conduct. Global executive searches continue for a new chief for Westpac’s consumer division – the bank’s biggest division by earnings – and a new chief information officer after David Lindberg and Craig Bright recently accepted roles in the UK.
