Frequently asked questions

What's a credit card?

It's a card issued by a bank or financial institution that gives you access to money to make cashless payments. Unlike a debit card, the money accessed is borrowed, meaning it must be paid back, along with any interest and other charges like an annual fee. Different types of credit cards include rewardslow rate and low fee cards, each with varying features, benefits and costs.

How does a credit card work?

A credit card lets you make cashless payments with borrowed money you'll need to repay. Interest is also charged on that money, though many credit cards offer conditional interest-free periods. Paying your credit card off sooner can help reduce interest charges. Your credit score could be affected if you don’t repay at least the minimum amount due each month.

How do I get a credit card?

You can apply for a Westpac credit card online or at any branch. We’ll ask for certain documentation – though this may vary if you already have an account with us – for proof of where you live, a regular income (minimum income requirements depend on card type), repayment ability, and a credit check. The act of applying for a credit card will affect your credit rating.
