What kind of account do you need?
Are you currently living in Australia?
Who can open
- Those 14 years or over.
- Those with an Australian residential address who are currently in Australia.
- Those who want to access their account with a Debit Mastercard
®, Online Banking and eStatements.
- Do you have a Concession or Health Care card or receive an Australian Government benefit payment that makes you eligible to hold a Concession or Health Care card? You may be eligible for a Westpac Choice Concession account.
- If you are under 30 years old or a full time tertiary student account-keeping fee is waived.
What you'll need
- Your mobile phone.
- At least one of the below ID documents to verify your identity:
- Passport
- Medicare Card
- Australian Driver’s Licence
- Australian Birth Certificate
Providing 2 forms of ID gives us a better chance to securely verify your ID online, saving you from visiting a branch.
- Have your foreign tax details handy, if applicable.

By opening this account you agree:

You’ll need to be in Australia to open an account with us. Once you arrive, you’ll need to provide an Australian residential address and phone number.
If your travel plans have been affected due to COVID-19 and you're unable to travel to Australia, please contact us.

Who can open
- Westpac customers 14 years or over.
- Those with an Australian residential address who are currently in Australia.
Applying from overseas or new to Australia?
- Do at least one of you hold a Concession or Health Care card or receive an Australian Government benefit payment that makes you eligible to hold a Concession or Health Care card? You may be eligible for a Westpac Choice for Concession Holders.
- Are you 55 years of age or over and retired? You may be eligible for Westpac Choice 55+ and Retired account.
- If you are under 30 years old or full time tertiary student account-keeping fee is waived.
What you'll need
- Your Westpac Online Banking credentials. You can register for Online Banking if you haven’t already.
- To gain full access to your account, you’ll need to be registered for Westpac Protect SMS Code. We’ll send an SMS Code to both applicants before opening your account.

Complete your application in branch together
If you or the person you’re applying with is a new Westpac customer, you’ll need to visit a branch together to open your account. Please make sure you both bring:
- Your tax details. We’ll need your Tax File Number (TFN) and if you’re a foreign tax resident, we’ll also need your tax residency details.
- Suitable ID. You’ll both need to be verified separately.
You can use our identification checklist to work out which documents you’ll need for your situation.
To ensure we’re best prepared to help you, please call the branch first to make an appointment.
