Natural disaster Government financial assistance

If you’ve been financially affected as a result of a natural disaster, such as the bushfires across Australia over summer, you may be eligible for Government financial assistance.

Below is a summary of Government assistance currently available for the 2019-20 bushfire season.

Australian Government Disaster Recovery Allowance

The Australian Government Disaster Recovery Allowance provides a short-term allowance to eligible people who have had their income reduced as a result of a declared major disaster, such as the Australian bushfires. Your income before and after the fires will affect how much you receive. The allowance is paid for up to 13 weeks to individuals who meet the following criteria:
 

  • If you're between 16 and 21 years old, you may only get the payments if you're considered independent
  • An Australian resident or hold an eligible visa and living in Australia for the period of time you receive the allowance
  • Work or live in an affected area that has been adversely affected by a declared major disaster 
  • Suffered a loss of income as a direct result of the declared natural disaster
  • Not be receiving any other government income support payment or pension

Australian Government Disaster Recovery Payment

You may also be eligible for the Australian Government Disaster Recovery Payment if you’ve been significantly affected by a declared natural disaster. It is generally paid as a one-off payment; however, you can choose to have it paid in two instalments. The payment is $1,000 per adult and $400 for each child younger than 16.

Government assistance for New Zealanders affected by the Australian bushfires

If you’re a New Zealand citizen who has suffered a loss of income as a direct result of the bushfires, you may also be eligible for Federal Government financial assistance, either through the Ex-Gratia Disaster Recovery Allowance or the Ex-Gratia Recovery Payment.
