How does the complimentary travel insurance work?
Complimentary Domestic and International insurance is accessible with eligible Westpac credit cards and is provided by Allianz Global Assistance.
For Complimentary International Medical Travel Insurance,[#] you must meet the Terms and Conditions and Eligibility Criteria for the relevant cover (including any minimum spend requirements and other conditions) and activate your insurance prior to departing Australia. Domestic Travel Insurance does not require activation.
If you are looking for additional cover you can choose to upgrade your cover by purchasing Comprehensive International Travel Insurance[#] and can access additional add on covers such as Cruise, Snow or Adventure Cover. You are also able to apply for cover for any pre-existing medical conditions, for an additional premium. The cost to purchase comprehensive insurance will depend on your risk profile and level of cover required.
If you are travelling within Australia, you could be eligible for insurance for flights within and between states in Australia.

No activation is required prior to travel to be eligible for Complimentary Domestic Travel Insurance.[#]
If you are travelling within Australia and hiring a car you could be eligible for Rental Vehicle Excess Insurance.[#]
If a rental vehicle you have rented from a rental company or agency in Australia is involved in an accident while you’re driving it, or is damaged or stolen while in your custody, cover may apply for:
- The excess shown on your rental agreement, or
- The cost of property damage for which you are liable.
No activation is required prior to travel to be eligible for Complimentary Rental Vehicle Excess Insurance in Australia.[#]
You could be eligible for up to 3 months’ (subject to your eligible card) Complimentary International Medical Travel Insurance[#] with key benefits such as:
- Overseas Medical & Hospital Expenses
- Funeral Expenses
- Personal Liability
- Overseas Emergency Assistance
You must ‘Activate’ your Complimentary International Medical Travel Insurance to access any of the benefits available.
For additional cover you can choose to upgrade by purchasing Comprehensive International Travel Insurance[#] and can access additional benefits such as:
- Extended trip duration
- Higher age limits
- Lower excess
- Higher cancellation limits
- Cover for certain pre-existing medical conditions (additional application required)
- Luggage and personal effects
- Accidental death
- Permanent disability
- Theft of Cash
- Rental vehicle excess
For an additional premium, you may be eligible to add cover for specific activities during your trip. Examples include Snow Pack, Cruise Pack and Adventure Pack.
This optional cover is only available if you upgrade your policy to Comprehensive International Travel Insurance.[#]
Activating Complimentary International Medical Travel Insurance
You must activate your Complimentary International Medical Travel Insurance[#] before departing for each overseas trip and meet the Terms and Conditions and Eligibility Criteria.
To activate, simply follow the steps below:
Step 1:
Sign in to Westpac Online Banking or the Westpac App.
Step 2:
Search Complimentary Credit Card Insurance.
Step 3:
Select Activate international travel insurance on the Westpac Credit Card Complimentary Insurance page, select your eligible Westpac Credit Card and follow the prompts.
Step 4:
On the Allianz Global Assistance website, select Activate your insurance and complete the Eligibility assessment.
Step 5:
If eligible, enter your travel details and choose whether to upgrade to Comprehensive cover and if you require any additional covers.
Step 6:
Once activated, your policy documents will be emailed to you.
How to claim
Lodge a claim online
To lodge a claim online sign into Westpac Online Banking or the Westpac App. Search Complimentary Credit Card Insurance. Once on the Complimentary Credit Card Insurance page select Manage.
Lodge a claim over the phone
Call Allianz Global Assistance on 1800 091 710 (Weekdays 8am-5pm AEST).
For claims where eligibility was met on or before 30 September 2026
Where you have met the eligibility criteria on or before 30 September 2026 you can lodge your claim online or email travelclaims@allianz-assistance.com.au.

No. Providing you have met the terms and conditions and eligibility criteria for travel booked before 1 October 2026, you’ll continue to be covered under the Westpac Credit Cards Complimentary Insurance Policy Information Booklet (effective date 23 February 2023), for travel that completes on or before 30 September 2027. You’re also not required to activate prior to travel.
For new travel where eligibility is met on or after 1 October 2026, you’ll be required to activate your insurance via Westpac Online Banking or the Westpac App and will be covered under the new policy provided you meet the terms and conditions and eligibility criteria.
You can activate or manage your policy through Westpac Online Banking or the Westpac App.
In Westpac Online Banking
- Select Products > Insurance > Credit Card Complimentary Insurance
- Click Activate international travel insurance
- Select the card you would like to activate or manage insurance for and click Next
- Consent to the Privacy Policy and ensure you’ve read and understood all relevant documents. You may be prompted to complete a security verification (e.g. SMS code or SecurID token) before proceeding
- Continue to Allianz Global Assistance and enter all relevant details on the website
In the Westpac App
Make sure you have the latest version of the App and you have signed in.
- Navigate to More > Insurance > Credit Card Complimentary Insurance
- Select Activate international travel insurance
- Select the card you would like to activate or manage insurance for and click Next

If the cardholder is eligible for the cover under the Westpac Credit Cards Complimentary Insurance (effective 1 October 2026), the cardholder’s spouse and up to 10 dependants also become eligible when each of them individually meet all of the following eligibility criteria:

you activate cover for your spouse and/or dependant(s) journey before leaving Australia. You can activate the cover on Westpac Online Banking or the Westpac App from 1 October 2026;
-
your spouse and/or dependant(s) have a permanent home in Australia and:
- are a permanent resident of Australia; or
- hold a current Australian visa - but not a tourist or working holiday visa - that will remain valid after your journey ends and allows you unrestricted right of entry into Australia; or
- hold a valid Australian Medicare card; and
-
any dependant(s) are aged under 25 years old at the time the cardholder activates this cover; and
-
each spouse and/or dependant has a return overseas travel ticket before leaving Australia; and
-
each spouse and/or dependant is travelling with the cardholder for at least 50% of the period of cover made available to the cardholder for the cardholder’s journey; and
-
before leaving Australia at least $500 of each of the spouse and/or dependant(s) prepaid travel costs are charged to the account holder’s card account or you purchase Comprehensive International Travel Insurance.[#] Prepaid travel costs include your return overseas travel ticket, your prepaid overseas accommodation, your prepaid cruise, travel or tour.
Yes. Complimentary International Medical Travel Insurance[#] is only available to eligible cardholders and spouses under the age of 81 years. Cover for any cardholder or spouse aged 81 years or over is available to both the cardholder and spouse should they choose to purchase Comprehensive International Travel Insurance[#] with Allianz.
Comprehensive International Travel Insurance is available to eligible travellers of all ages.
Adventure Pack and Snow Pack are only available for eligible travellers under the age of 81 years.

Yes, if you’ve purchased a Comprehensive International Travel Insurance Policy, cover will continue under the Westpac Credit Card International Travel Insurance Product Disclosure Statement (effective 1 October 2026). For any claims you’ll need to contact Allianz Global Assistance on 1800 091 710 or via the Online Claims Portal.
If you haven’t purchased a Comprehensive International Travel Insurance[#] policy, you will not be covered under the Complimentary International Medical Travel Insurance (effective 1 October 2026) if you cancel your Westpac credit card.
From 1 October 2026, to meet the eligibility requirements, the primary cardholder must:

Have a permanent home in Australia and must either:
- Be a permanent resident of Australia; or
- Hold a current Australian Visa (excluding tourist or working holiday visas); or
- Hold a valid Australian Medicare card; and
-
Have a return overseas travel ticket before leaving Australia; and
-
Activate cover for the journey before leaving Australia via the Westpac App or Online Banking, or by calling Allianz Global Assistance; and

Be aged under 81.
From 1 October 2026, to meet the eligibility requirements, your dependants/spouse must:

Spend at least $500 on prepaid travel costs, charged to the accountholder's card before leaving Australia; and
-
Have a permanent home in Australia and must either:
- Be a permanent resident of Australia; or
- Hold a current Australian Visa (excluding tourist or working holiday visas); or
- Hold a valid Australian Medicare card; and
- Be aged under 25 years old at the time of cover activation (applicable for dependants only); and
-
Have a return overseas travel ticket before leaving Australia; and

Travel with the accountholder for at least 50% of the accountholder's journey; and
-
Be aged under 81.
