What is card skimming?

Accepting card payments is safe, convenient and essential to the smooth operation of your businesses. However with card skimming and other types of card fraud on the rise, it’s crucial to know how to detect and prevent card skimming from damaging your business credibility.

Criminals use sophisticated equipment to skim data from a customer’s card as it’s swiped through a EFTPOS terminal then use this information for financial gain. To do this they need access to your EFTPOS terminal so it’s important to guard it like you would cash.

How to protect against card skimming

Safeguard against card skimming by checking your EFTPOS terminal daily to ensure it:

  • Looks the same as before and has no damage
  • Has the same type and number of cables
  • Has the correct serial number
  • Prints receipts with the right business name and address
  • Is clear of any hidden camera.

If you suspect card skimming, immediately report it to your service.
