Where everyone can be a part of the digital future

Meet Anastasia Cammaroto, Chief Information Officer, Consumer Bank.

Ever since I was small, I’ve enjoyed taking things apart to understand how they work. I apply the same level of curiosity to leadership – being very self-aware and identifying the specific skills needed so I can consciously build my knowledge and experience. It is that curiousness that keeps me motivated to keep learning every day.

Path to leadership

When I first became a manager I had a team of 6 and I took full advantage of all the training available to me. The next team I managed was of 10 and so on. Each time I took on a bigger role I was always eager to know what it would be like to scale that complexity even further.

 

Leading a large team you’ve got to have a passion for people and be genuinely keen to motivate, listen and influence. A large part of the role is painting the vision and finding what makes people excited to be part of building something special – whether that ‘something special’ is a team, culture, or a customer outcome.

Be part of the digital future

I started my career in engineering and then around the time of Y2K there was huge demand in the tech industry for people who could bring creative new ways of solving problems. Fast forward to today and digital is at the centre of everything. From security, data analytics and mobile to newer areas such as artificial intelligence, there are so many areas of opportunity.

 

I feel very passionately that we need to address the gender imbalance in technology. Through diversity we get better ideas that are more representative of the communities we’re building products and solutions for. The future is all about digital and women need to be part of defining that future.

 

I’m proud of the work we’re doing at Westpac to advance more women into technology careers. We have mentoring and scholarship programs to encourage more girls to study STEM subjects, our sponsorship of Code Camp to teach kids to code, and we have lots of internal initiatives such as the Technology Future Female Leaders program to help women prepare for leadership.

 

It’s not just technical skills that we’re looking for either. At Westpac we have many amazing women who’ve made a career shift into technology from another sector. Many skills are highly transferrable, just check out Suzy’s story.

 

Most recently, we’re proud to be partnering with Vogue Australia to make technology more fashionable and break down some of the stereotypes. It’s called Vogue Codes – and it’s going to be a lot of fun.
