Starting out

Establishing my goals

One of the keys to successful investing is identifying your investment goals, and the timeframe over which you will invest. What do you want to do with your money?

  • Do you want to save for a goal?
  • Do you want to invest a certain amount?
  • How long do you want to put that money away for?

Understanding my goals

Your investment goal might be something very specific, such as buying a home, a car or a holiday. It might be more general, such as building your retirement nest egg. Whatever it is, if you’re clear about your destination, you’ll have a greater chance of getting there.

Knowing my timeframe

When it comes to choosing investments, it’s important to know when you’ll need to sell them – in the short, medium or long term.

  • Where do you want to be this time next year?
  • Are you planning to save for a deposit for a house or set up a business in the next 5 years?
  • Is there a longer term goal you're planning for like children's education or a holiday house?

Choosing my strategy

You also need to be clear about whether you want to create your own plan and not take advice about which wealth solutions to choose, or whether you want to speak to a Westpac Financial Planner. With so many choices and opportunities available today it makes sense to go directly to someone who specialises in financial advice. Our Planners have knowledge that a new investor can really put to good use. They can help you establish your financial position, clarify your goals and make you aware of the options available to you. Once you've agreed your financial plan, they’ll advise you on ways to put it into action.
