PIN’s the only way to pay

From 1 August 2014, signatures are being phased out as a form of authorisation for credit card payments in Australia.  All Australian credit cards and debit cards will instead use a PIN number to authorise payments at the point of sale.

Don’t get caught out – make sure you are prepared for the credit card PIN changes.

Why use a PIN?

It's more secure than signing – It’s easy for someone to see your signature, but only you know your PIN. Using your PIN for purchases on your credit and debit cards is safer than signing and makes it harder for card fraudsters. There’s only a 1 in 10,000 chance of somebody guessing your PIN.

Faster and more convenient – using your PIN is quicker than signing. Just enter your PIN and you’re done.

Internationally more accepted – some overseas retailers only accept PIN to authorise credit and debit card transactions. So ensure you know your PIN if you’re travelling overseas.

Frequently asked questions

Personal Identification Number (PIN) is the security access code that belongs to a specific credit or debit card. Some cards can be used to access more than one account; however there is only one PIN to access the card itself.
