How to switch your bank accounts to Westpac

Switching your bank accounts to Westpac

Follow these 4 simple steps to help make switching to Westpac easier.

Step 1 - Identify regular inward and outward payments from your old account

Ask your previous financial institution for a regular payment summary (PDF 42kb), which shows payments to and from your account for the past 13 months. These might include:

  • Salary, rental income and share dividends
  • Loan and credit card payments
  • Utility and phone bills
  • Insurance premiums and memberships.

Step 2 - Open a new account with us

Choose the Westpac bank account that suits your needs and:

Step 3 - Online switch application

There are 2 ways to redirect regular payments from your old account to your new Westpac account:

  • In person - visit your local branch and we can help you complete the switching process, or
  • Online - using our online application . This generates a switch form, which you then sign and return to us by:
    • Visiting your local Westpac branch
    • Scanning and emailing to: deops@westpac.com.au
    • Faxing 1300 138 388

We'll then do all the work in notifying your services providers of your new Westpac account details.

Step 4 - Close your old account

  • Don't forget to give your current employer your salary credit letter (PDF 64kb) with your new Westpac account details.
  • Make sure you allow 10 business days for regular payments, salary deposit and periodical payments to transfer to your new Westpac account.
  • When you expect the next payment to appear, use Online Banking to check transactions on your new Westpac account.
  • If a regular payment has not been switched, you should contact the company/service provider to change all your direct debits/credits to your new Westpac account and/or new linked Debit MasterCard®. To help you with this, you should use:
  • If you have existing direct debits or credits linked to your old Debit VISA/MasterCard or credit card, please contact the company you have arrangements with and let them know of your new linked Westpac Debit MasterCard® card or credit card.
  • With periodical payments, cancel those on your old account and then set up a new periodical payment by simply calling 132 032 or use Online Banking.
  • Finally, contact your previous bank to close your old account.
