The Sustainable Supply Chain Management (SSCM) Questionnaire

The SSCM Questionnaire is an additional sustainability screening process required for targeted higher risk and high spend suppliers. Those high spend suppliers (also called our "Top 100 by spend") are considered to be "key" suppliers to Westpac.

As at 20 September 2007, 62% of Westpac's total annual spend was concentrated in this Top 100. Working closely with and monitoring these key suppliers to continuously improve social, ethical and environmental performance further ensures mutual sustainability – Westpac's and companies in its supply chain.

Note: This process also applies to targeted Westpac New Zealand suppliers.

Do not complete these steps unless you have been formally notified by the SSCM team at Westpac to complete the SSCM Questionnaire.

Background information on the SSCM Questionnaire
This detailed survey allows Westpac to evaluate a supplier's performance in regard to their practices, with a view to seek continuous improvement on already existing measures.

These areas of business practice are internationally recognised drivers of corporate responsibility behaviour, used in the Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI) and other sustainability indices:
  • Governance and ethics - significant views and commitments of the supplier.
  • Labour standards - people management that complies with or exceeds legislated requirements.
  • Community involvement - positive (and systematic) interactions with local communities.
  • Environment - management of environmental issues, particularly measuring, reporting and improving performance in this area.
  • Marketplace management - management of that company's supply chain and stakeholders.

Improving sustainability performance – Sustainability Action Plans (SAPs)
A SAP template is built into the SSCM Questionnaire and includes a broad list of possible continuous improvement activities for suppliers with gaps in sustainability performance.

Suppliers are responsible for preparing a SAP and should put forward other and more specific activities wherever possible. The SAP must be approved by Westpac before any agreements are signed.

For companies supplying to Westpac New Zealand
If you have been asked to complete the questionnaire email the completed SSCM Questionnaire to SSCM@westpac.com.au and rob_cameron@westpac.co.nz.
