Account Overdrawn Fee (AOF) - What is it and how is it charged?

  • An AOF is charged to the account on each day that we honour a cheque or other debit, where doing so causes the account to become overdrawn (or increases an existing overdraft beyond the agreed limit) without prior arrangement or authorisation from us
  • An AOF will only be generated by a customer initiated transaction resulting in an account being overdrawn
  • An AOF applies to all transaction, savings and mortgage accounts subject to customer initiated debit transactions

What are some of the ways you can avoid or minimise an Account Overdrawn Fee (AOF)?
Account Overdrawn Fees are often incurred due to periodic payments, direct debits or cheques presented. The following options may be available:
  • Check balances regularly via a Westpac ATM, Telephone Banking, or Internet Banking to ensure there are sufficient cleared funds available to make scheduled payments. Please note there may be a fee on certain accounts if more than 12 Telephone Banking enquiries are made per month
  • Set up a due date to process the payment a day after scheduled payment of cleared funds are made to the account
  • Maintain a consistent surplus balance to ensure there are sufficient cleared funds available when scheduled payments are processed
  • Ensure sufficient cleared funds are available in the account prior to writing a cheque
  • Establish an automatic transfer or automatic replenishment to ensure there are sufficient cleared funds available when the scheduled payment is due. Please note there is a fee for this service
  • Consider an alternative method for scheduled payments, eg salary disbursement, BPAY or Internet Banking
  • Set up your direct debit to draw from an alternate applicable account (eg credit card, loan account)
  • Investigate the possibility of a permanent overdraft
  • Set a reminder in your diary, organiser, computer or mobile phone for the day before a scheduled payment is due. This way you can ensure there are sufficient cleared funds in your account for the payment
  • Use our Budget Planner
