Brendan McHugh
Head of Technology - P&P Systems
IT

"In IT, we have the opportunity to go 'on assignment', for up to two years and move to different projects and departments within the organisation. This naturally promotes a changing work force and keeps us fresh and flexible in our approach. Not only do you constantly meet new people and build new skills, but then you're able to bring across all the learnings that you've acquired from the previous area. So there's a great exchange of information and ideas which contributes to the knowledge."

Catherine Oakshott
Project Manager, Enterprise Services
IT

"For the past 10 years, I've worked part-time as a Project Manager for Westpac. Over time, I've adjusted my working hours to meet the needs of my family life. Westpac has always supported and respected my choice and shown great flexibility in helping me to maintain a work/life balance as I moved through different positions. You need to manage your time well, and prioritise your tasks. As a part-timer, you work to achieve more in the time that you have. As this is a very team-oriented organisation, it's also important to dedicate some time to building rapport and relationships with the people you work with. Westpac IT operates on an assignment based model. This allows our IT people greater diversity in their roles. In my current assignment as Resource Manager, I look to place our IT people in assignments which suit their current skills and experience, and also take into account their goals for the future, and which assignments can help them develop along the way"

Joint Workstream Leader – Technology, Reach Program
Business & Consumer Banking

"This is much more than a technical job. You really have to go beyond IT to understand the business of banking. We focus on delivering business results from an integrated approach, not on implementing a top-class technically complex system. Our overall objective as a department is to raise revenue for the bank so that's fundamental to our decision-making process. We're all motivated by results. Lucky for us, we're in a position of being able to see and measure tangible results through the systems we deliver."
