Pen or PIN

Credit card transactions have always required your signature but now you have the option of using a 4-digit PIN (personal identification number) instead. Of course, you can continue to sign as you've always done. The choice is yours.

Pen or Pin

Transactions are now quicker with a PIN

Keying in your 4-digit PIN is more convenient than signing because it's quicker. No longer will you have to juggle purchases, docket, pen and try and sign. Just enter your PIN on the keypad and you're done.

Why now?

The PIN option brings Australia into line with markets in Europe and the United Kingdom. In fact, some overseas retailers only accept PIN authorisations for credit and debit card transactions.

Locally, every major bank, financial institution and card scheme have collaborated with retailers, merchants and service providers to ensure consistent industry-wide and nationwide implementation.

Q. I have a PIN on my card already. Do I need a new PIN?
A. No, your existing PIN is what you should use for verification.

Q. What if I have been issued a PIN but have forgotten it?
A. Simply call Westpac on 1300 788 384 and our Customer Support Team can issue you with a new PIN.

Q. What cards do not support the new PIN option?
A. Currently, Westpac American Express® and MasterCard® Gift are unable to use PIN verification. We are working on having PIN capability on the American Express card shortly; we will let you know when this is available. Meanwhile, you will need to sign as usual for these transactions.
