Pen or Pin

Optional PIN on credit card transactions

Cardholders of enabled credit cards can now verify their transaction by entering their PIN into the EFTPOS terminal rather than signing a sales slip for the merchant to compare the signatures. This is an optional choice for the cardholder and is only effective for card present purchases using an EFTPOS terminal - not Internet, card not present or phone (MOTO) transactions.

Westpac EFTPOS Terminals can accept PIN's from cardholders with compliant credit cards.

FAQ

Should I be asking customers to use a PIN?

While processing the credit card transaction through the EFTPOS terminal, the terminal will prompt you to ask the cardholder to enter PIN or press OK/Enter. The choice to use PIN or signature (PIN or Pen) is at the discretion of the cardholder. Simply hand over the EFTPOS terminal to the cardholder to type their PIN when prompted and press OK/Enter. Alternatively, press OK/Enter if the customer does not wish to use a PIN.

If a customer wants to enter a PIN how do they do it?

If the cardholder chooses to enter a PIN they should do so if prompted by the terminal. As the merchant, you should give the customer the opportunity to enter their PIN when the Enter PIN prompt is displayed. Simply hand over the EFTPOS terminal to the cardholder to type their PIN when prompted and press OK/Enter.

What if the cardholder does not know or chooses not to enter their PIN?

If the cardholder chooses to sign or does not know their PIN, simply press OK/Enter when prompted by the terminal.

Does the customer still have to sign the receipt?

Always check the Merchant Copy of the EFTPOS receipt for a signature line. The cardholder must sign on the Signature line if a signature is required.(you have a right to view the cardholder's card for signature verification and to confirm the identify of the cardholder).

What if the cardholder enters their PIN incorrectly?

The terminal allows for re-entry of PIN. Multiple re-entry of an incorrectly entered PIN may result in re-try limits being exceeded. If the cardholder does not know their PIN, the transaction can be processed with signature.

Is the PIN now optional for Debit cards?

No. Debit Card transactions are not changing and always require entry of a PIN.
