A sense of community in rural and regional Australia
Westpac is involved in a range of rural activities dedicated to building a sense of community in the bush, from the Landcare awards to Operation Backyard.
Apart from the larger regional projects, staff-driven environmental activities also cover communities at Balranald in NSW, Camperdown in Victoria, Hamilton Hill in Western Australia, Huon Valley in Tasmania, Mary River in Northern Territory, Rainworth in Queensland and Urrbrae in South Australia.
Some community programs include:
Westpac Landcare Education Award
This award pays tribute to the many individuals, environmental groups, schools and organisations showing commitment to the care of the land.
The awards fit with Westpac's emphasis on a learning or educational focus in its community involvement.
Westpac Operation Backyard
Since Operation Backyard was launched in 1998, Westpac staff have volunteered for environmental projects and then applied for funding to assist the projects.
They've been involved in helping restore coastal dunes, bush land, and degraded recreational areas, as well as making roadways more wildlife-friendly. More than $963,000 has been committed to 228 projects across Australia.
