Ethics and reputation
We recognise you’re part of a unique and specialised sector. We also believe we have an ongoing responsibility to local communities, beyond our corporate confines.
Long-term local initiatives
- Our Community Funding Program allocates funds to local branches to support issues of relevance in their community
- The Employee Volunteer Program gives paid leave to Westpac staff who volunteer for charity and community projects
- We’ve brought back over 600 local Bank Managers to support local communities.
Independent recognition
- We were the first Australian bank to sign up to the Equator Principles, committing us to environmentally and socially responsible investing
- Awarded Money Magazine’s ‘Best of the Best’ gold award for Climate Leadership in 2009
- Acknowledged as the most ethical company in Australia by the Ethisphere Institute in their 2010 World Ethical Company’s List
- Only Australian bank recognised as one of the 2010 ‘Global 100 Most Sustainable Corporations’ by the Corporate Knights Magazine
- 1 of only 2 banks rated as Gold Class by the Dow Jones sustainability index in 2009.
We're not just in a position to help, we are helping
- Matching Gifts: we match employee donations to charity dollar for dollar – since 1999, 1250 Australian-based charities have received $22.5 million from employees and the Westpac Group
- Mentoring for community organisations to help increase efficiencies
- The Westpac Foundation provides annual grants helping not-for-profit organisations create and sustain social enterprises in disadvantaged communities
- Westpac Assist helps those experiencing financial hardship. We’ve helped 50,000 customers with over $3 billion in accounts over the last year
- Our Westpac Group community contributions to the social sector totalled $86.9 million in 2009. (This includes foregone revenue from fee-free accounts for non-profits and low income earners, charitable gifts, community investment, eco projects, in kind and commercial sponsorships.)
