Westpac & Charles Sturt University Agribusiness Index

June 2011 edition

Australian agribusiness performance remained positive although slightly lower than in the March quarter, influenced by climatic conditions and consumer demand, reports the June 2011 Westpac and Charles Sturt University (CSU) Agribusiness Index.

Business confidence overall fell to 69%, lower than 76% last quarter and marginally lower than for the same time last year. South Australia recorded the highest level of business confidence among the states at 84%. Compared to last quarter, Producers reported the lowest level of business confidence (65%), a fall of 10%, whilst the Downstream sector showed the only increase in confidence up to 82%.

For Australia the overall EPI rose to +0.04 in the quarter, down from +0.05 in the March quarter and well below the +0.12 recorded for the September quarter 2010. The best performing state was New South wales with an EPI of +0.11whilst 2 states showed negative performance - Queensland (-0.04) and Western Australia (-0.09)
